Chia Pets

Almost every adult has heard of Chia Pets. They are the planters with fluffy greenery that looks like fur on an animal, but you may not realize that they are still around and that they make great dollhouse decorations. In case you are too young to remember Chia Pets, they are hollow terra cotta planters that were the rage for years. Introduced by Joseph Enterprises, Inc. of San Francisco, CA in 1977, they were a very popular holiday gift for several years.

Chia Pets have small grooves in them that give the chia seeds a place to sprout and form small green leaves that cover the body of the planter. The interesting part of Chia Pets is that they come in so many varieties that all grow the same greenery that looks just like fur on such shapes as dogs, cats, or elephants. The Original Chia Pets were sold in the shape of a puppy, hippopotamus, dinosaur, elephant, kitten, cow, frog, pig, crocodile, and bunny. Although these animals are still somewhat popular, there are new pets that many buyers find much more interesting. For instance, the American Collection includes political figures, such as Barrack Obama, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Hillary Clinton, and the Statue of Liberty. They would make quite a conversation piece when placed in an area that guests could see when they enter your home!

Other new Chia Pets include Chia Guy and Chia Professor. They will both grow a full head of hair within one to two weeks. Cartoon characters are also available, including Chia Garfield, the naughty cat, Chia Scooby-Doo, the detective dog, and Chia Tweety, the yellow bird loved by so many people. The famous Spongebob Squarepants is also now a Chia Pet in the form of Chia Spongebob, the cartoon character yellow sponge who does indeed wear pants.

Two of the most interesting new Chia Pets are Chia Tree with Star Light, a Christmas tree that grows chia seed sprouts and has a sparkling star on its top, and Chia Cat Grass Planter. The Chia Cat Grass Planter grows catnip that your kitty will love rather than growing chia seeds. It would make a great gift for cat lovers, especially those whose pets won’t stay away from their other plants!

Buying a Chia Pet is really a bargain if you know that you can use the planter over and over indefinitely. All you have to do is buy more seeds when the original ones are no longer green and fresh-looking. Other herb seeds can also be used on the planters, such as alfalfa, marjoram, thyme, or basil. Each Chia Pet is sold with the handmade terra cotta planter, seeds for three plantings, a plastic drip tray, and a planting and care instruction sheet. More chia seeds can be purchased for the true Chia Pet lover who wants to keep a Chia Pet green at all times.

Taking care of a Chia Pet is so easy that anyone can do it. Simply soak the terra cotta planter in water for 24 hours. You will need to mix two teaspoons of chia seeds with one-fourth cup of water and stir well, making sure that all of the seeds are moistened. This mixture will also have to wait for 24 hours. The next day, all you will need to do is spread the seed mixture, that is now a thick gel, onto the figure, water it with a mist, and it will begin to grow. Chia Pets should be kept at room temperature, away from windows because hot or cold temperatures may injure your little pet!
